  • LANMessage is a small messaging utility that lets you send your message to one or more users on the LAN (Local Area Network), even in other domains. With a compact interface featuring a “Message to” window and a “Text message” window, this utility can be called up from the system tray at any time via context menu or hot keys. Simply select the message recipient (user(s) or/and group(s)) in the “Message to” window, type your message in the “Text message” window, and then click on the “Send” button to send the message. You can create as well as edit your own private list of friends on the LAN. In this private list you can create a groups of users, and a nice logging feature lets you create a log of all sent messages and save it to file. This messenger can be configured to start with Windows. LANMessage is very small, easy to use and user friendly.

LANMessage is a very simple messaging application for the Mac. It allows you to send messages to any Mac on your home network that is running the application. To access the graphical user interface, you need to open the Preferences window from the menubar. Here, you will see a list of all the Macs that are running the application on your network. You can set a group name and a port on all the computers to join a specific group. By default, the application uses the group name “Home” on port 9090. At the bottom of the screen is a small field where you can type the message that you want to broadcast. When you do that, a transparent, floating window with your message will appear both on your computer and the computer to which you are sending the message. It will be displayed only for a few seconds. If another user wants to reply, they will have to do it from the Preferences window as well. There is no way to reply quickly.

In short, LANMessage is a simple way to send messages across your network. The application is a bit old and there are better ways to send messages, especially these days, when everyone is probably connected to an instant messenger all day.LAN Messenger is a free and open-source cross-platform instant messaging application for communication over a local network. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my nickname?
Open the Preferences windows, go to the Account section and enter the nickname in the field marked ‘User name as seen by contacts’. Remember that your user name is the only way your contacts can identify you, so changing it often is probably not a good idea.

Others are not able to read my user name! They only see weird characters
This occurs when you have entered a nickname that contains characters from a language that is not available on your contact’s computer. Unfortunately, there is nothing LAN Messenger for PC can do about it. Either your contacts should add support for the language or you should use a language that is available for everyone.

How do I change my avatar picture?
Click on your avatar image in the top right region of the main window. A menu will open up listing all the available avatars that you can select. You can set a custom avatar by clicking on “Browse for more pictures” and selecting an image.

I am not able to see any contacts
Make sure you are connected to your local network and that no firewall is blocking Free LAN Messenger from connecting to the network. On Windows, LAN Msg automatically takes care of the system firewall. If you are using third-party software, or you are running LANMessenger Client LMC on another platform, you may need to check this manually.

I did all the above, but I still can’t see any contacts
In order to see others on your network, all of you must be using the same network settings. Open the Preferences window, go to the Network section, and verify that this is the case. It’s best to use the default values if you are not sure about what you are doing. In case the values have been changed and you want to reset to defaults, read the following question.

How do I reset settings to the default value?
If you want to reset your settings, open the Preferences window, and click the “Reset Preferences” button, and select “Yes” when prompted.

What is the broadcast address, UDP port, TCP port, etc.
The broadcast address is used for network-wide communications. You can edit it to include a smaller subnet. UDP and TC ports are communication endpoints used to identify a specific address.
