Strip HTML files of all code and special characters to view only the translated ASCII text, thanks to this small-sized, portable and straightforward app

Remove HTML Tags

2.0/5

Review by Elena Opris on December 2, 2014

Remove HTML Tags is an ultra-simplistic software application whose purpose is to strip all HTML code from a given text, leaving only the ASCII characters shown on the screen.

It does not come equipped with any kind of options or configuration parameters, so its functionality is limited. However, the app shouldn’t be underestimated, as it may prove to be a great help to users who want to instantly find out the content hidden behind HTML code, or even if they want to check their own code to make sure everything is correct.

No installation necessary

There is no setup pack involved, which makes Remove HTML Tags portable. It means that you can save the executable file to any part of the hard drive and just click it to run, as well as copy it to a pen drive or other mass storage device, in order to launch it on any machine with minimum effort and no previous installers.

Worth mentioning is that, unlike most installers, it does not modify Windows registry settings or create extra files on the disk without your approval, thus leaving no traces behind after its removal.

Minimalistic interface with no indications

The UI is based on a single window with a white background and a simple text editor, and it doesn’t show any buttons, tips or indications. All you have to do is paste your HTML code here and the program will automatically eliminate the HTML tags, displaying only the ASCII characters.

There are no other noteworthy options provided by this piece of software. Although it does not integrate buttons for printing data, exporting it to file, or copying it to the Clipboard, the latter option can be done by making a text selection and using the global “Copy” keyboard shortcut or by opening the right-click menu.

Evaluation and conclusion

As expected, the app’s impact on computer performance is insignificant, thanks to the fact that it runs on a low amount of CPU and RAM. It instantly strips the HTML tags and did not hang, crash or pop up error messages in our tests. Although it doesn’t seem like a powerful tool, Remove HTML Tags can be a great help, even for serious programmers who are in a hurry.

Extracting text from an HTML file is literally the same thing as copying-and-pasting webpage information onto a notepad. It may sound simple, but imagine if you were to extract text from thousands of HTML files (webpages), it wouldn’t be as fun then. As a matter of fact, extracting text from web pages serves a lot of practical uses, just to name a few:

  • Download the blogs from webpages
  • Download all news articles from a specific website
  • Capture product information such as the SKU, model, description from eCommerce websites like Amazon and eBay.
  • Extract only the text part of the web page, without the tables, images, or other forms of data
  • Clean a messy HTML file to include only the readable content from the file

Nowadays everyone is talking about data and how it is helping to learn hidden patterns and new insights. The right set of data can help a business to improve its marketing strategy and that can increase the overall sales. And let’s not forget the popular example in which a politician can know the public’s opinion before elections. Data is powerful, but it does not come for free. Gathering the right data is always expensive; think of surveys or marketing campaigns, etc.

The internet is a pool of data and, with the right set of skills, one can use this data in a way to gain a lot of new information. You can always copy paste the data to your excel or CSV file but that is also time-consuming and expensive. Why not hire a software developer who can get the data into a readable format by writing some jiber-jabber? Yes, it is possible to extract data from Web and this “jibber-jabber” is called Web Scraping.

Part I provided a general overview of the web design environment. Now that we’ve covered the big concepts, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and start creating a real web page. It will be an extremely simple page, but even the most complicated pages are based on the principles described here.

In this chapter, we’ll create a web page step by step so you can get a feel for what it’s like to mark up a document with HTML tags. The exercises allow you to work along.

This is what I want you to get out of this chapter:

    • Get a feel for how markup works, including an understanding of elements and attributes.
    • See how browsers interpret HTML documents.
    • Learn the basic structure of an HTML document.
    • Get a first glimpse of a style sheet in action.

Don’t worry about learning the specific text elements or style sheet rules at this point; we’ll get to those in the following chapters. For now, just pay attention to the process, the overall structure of the document, and the new terminology.

This software offers a solution to users who want to extract all non-tagged text content from HTML files. All tagged content including URLs and comments are deleted. This versatile tool will save you time by manipulating multiple files at once. There is a feature to save results as a text file.
