Simplifying Apple TV and AirPlay in the enterprise – users want their iPhones and iPads to work and communicate with other resources on the network. That means dealing with Apple’s “Bonjour” protocol. Bonjour network traffic is constrained within single VLANs. How do you make that AppleTV or printer on one VLAN work with iPads on another? Blaser Software’s mDNS Repeater is a scalable workaround to make this a reality – and it’s available at a cost that is practical

mdns-repeater

mdns-repeater is an application level gateway which re-broadcasts Multicast DNS (mDNS) packets received on one interface to other interfaces. Since mDNS is “administratively scoped” such a gateway is required when mDNS resolutions should work across subnet borders.

Introduction

There are several application level gateways out there which re-broadcast mDNS messages accross subnet borders. The most prominent example for Linux is Avahi which can be run in so-called reflector mode. If some time later after installing an Ahavi reflector in your network error messages like the following occure then you should probably continue reading.

VyOS (1.2.x) provides a Multicast DNS repeater functionality.

Multicast DNS uses the 224.0.0.51 address, which is “administratively scoped” and does not leave the subnet. It re-broadcast mDNS packets from one interface to other interfaces. This enables support for e.g. Airplay devices across multiple VLANs.

Will re-broadcast all mDNS packets from eth0 to eth1 and vice versa.

mDNS repeater can be disabled using set service mdns repeater disable
