RenPrinters 2 is a service that will rename the printer names of your Remote Desktop / Terminal Service clients. You have many configuration options like: Pick the naming format you would like, Ignore printers using a driver(s) you specify. Decide what to do if a duplicate printer name exists and you have the option to only rename printers using the Terminal Service (TS) Port. This tool is a common solution for players that need printer names that everytime stay consistant or your tool needs a shorter printer name in order to work.

Hello everyone I’m hoping someone has ran into the same issue as I have and found a solution. Maybe this is a quick answer. So far my searches have yielded nothing.

The issue I am running into is with 2012 R2 Easy Print printer names. We have an application that stores specific printing preferences inside the application and whenever a user logs back they end up getting a new printer name because Easy Print does printer naming like “Fax (redirected nn).”

In other products we used like TriCerat ScrewDrivers you can set the default naming up to use something other than the session number; such as “Fax (%username%).” However I can’t find any equivalent setting for Easy Print. Has anyone ran into this issue and what have you done to resolve it; short of telling the user to just deal with it.

1. add the printer driver to the server for each printer used. You may run into trouble using the Easy Print driver in the future. I find it best to just always configure the printer’s driver. This may be difficult if you have a ton of users/different printers. You can add the driver using Print Management (make sure you have the printer role/feature installed). Or just install the printer like you normally would. Do this on the server.
2. use gpedit.msc or group policy to make the server not use the easy print driver first. http://www.grishbi.com/2014/08/disable-remote-desktop-easy-print/
3. Now that easy print driver is not the first selection for the printer, you should be able to use Printerceptor to change the name to something that isn’t going to change.
